🌶️ Peperoncini Calabrese "A Sigaretta" - Classic Southern Italian seasoning!

The Peperoncini Calabrese a Sigaretta is one of the most iconic peppers from southern Italy, and a true pride of the Calabria region. These oblong, slender and often slightly squiggly fruits - reminiscent of a cigarette, hence the name - are bright red when ripe and have a delicious, spicy sharpness. With a spiciness of about 15,000 - 30,000 SHU they sit nicely in the middle: spicy enough to give a kick, but not overwhelming.

This pepper is ideally suited for drying. The thin-walled fruits quickly lose their moisture and can then be easily ground into flakes or powder. For example, you often find them in southern Italian cuisine: as a topping on pizza, through pasta or incorporated into sauces and oil.

🌱 Cultivation information:

  • Type: Capsicum annuum

  • Plant height: 60-80 cm

  • Fruit: long, thin, slightly curved, red when ripe

  • Sowing advice: pre-sow in February - March, planting out after the last frost

  • Harvest: summer to fall

💡 Culinary Tip: Dry the ripe peppers whole and only crumble them when you use them. This way, aroma and sharpness are optimally preserved, just like the Italians do!
