The Peperoncini Calabrese a Sigaretta is one of the most iconic peppers from southern Italy, and a true pride of the Calabria region. These oblong, slender and often slightly squiggly fruits - reminiscent of a cigarette, hence the name - are bright red when ripe and have a delicious, spicy sharpness. With a spiciness of about 15,000 - 30,000 SHU they sit nicely in the middle: spicy enough to give a kick, but not overwhelming.
This pepper is ideally suited for drying. The thin-walled fruits quickly lose their moisture and can then be easily ground into flakes or powder. For example, you often find them in southern Italian cuisine: as a topping on pizza, through pasta or incorporated into sauces and oil.
